Who creates fashion taboos? And why are we often so willing to subscribe to them? No white pants after labor day, no stripes with polka dots, no mixing black and brown… Over time, some of these fashion taboos have become the biggest fashion trends. That’s why the older I get, the more willing I am to throw caution to the wind. Especially when it comes to my fashion choices. In fact, if today’s outfit could talk, it would say, “taboo shmaboo!” 😛I purchased this polka dot skirt 2 years ago while visiting Japan. The lace trim peeking out from underneath the skirt’s unusual combination of black and brown caught my eye immediately. I love the added level of femininity the lace brings. Unfortunately, I could never find the right top to pair with this skirt. Until… I wore it with this striped 3/4 sleeved top. The black stripes pick up the black dots in the skirt creating a harmonious gestalt. I added a black faux leather jacket for a little extra warmth, black mary janes, and gold jewelry to complement the earth toned skirt. What fashion taboos do you break?
Polka dot skirt: Japanese boutique, approximately $40 (On sale from original $70)
Striped top: Old Navy, $9.99 (On sale from original $16.94)
Faux leather jacket: Ross (3 years old. I don’t remember the price)

I love your outfit! As far as taboos go, I love that colorblocking has gone from taboo to a trend…though it never really stopped me 😉

Kick the taboo mindset to the curb! I love this outfit J. Frost, though dissimilar in print and pattern, the two pieces blend in so well with one another! I really like how the striped shirt adds a cool edge to the feminine polka dot + lace skirt. Just truly adorable!! xo~ Lena

polkadots and stripes are amazing together. I never wear polka dots or stripes (more of a floral print gal) but I love this!

Thanks, dear! I have so many stripes and polka dots. Maybe I’ll start migrating to the floral print side some.
